Welcome to the ‘It’s not about the bike’ bike ride blog (LeJog 2014)

Thanks for visiting my Blog. The initial purpose of ‘AboutNeil.com’ is to keep anyone who is interested, informed about my ‘It’s not about the bike’ Lands End to John O Groats charity Bike ride (aka LeJog or E2E).

Today has been quite a day in that respect as I’ve booked my rail travel to Penzance for the 1st October, leaving Peterborough at 08:12 and my return travel from Thurso on the 16th October, overnighting in Inverness and concluding with the Inverness to Peterborough trip on the 17th arriving home at 15:27. I’ll be 52 on the 19th. So I hope to celebrate that weekend! Suddenly it is all rather real.

This week I’m taking some leave and will be riding my bike as it’s a good idea to practice I think! Last time I did this ride was in 9 days over 863 miles in 1999 with a team of colleagues and full backup. I was 37 and rode myself into fitness. This time I’ll be riding further and I’m 15 years older, carrying my own kit and riding circa 1000 miles and climbing in the region of 30000feet and riding myself into the ground. My current route is shown in my subsequent posts.

One or two friends have expressed an interest in joining me for the odd mile or three. You are very welcome!

A lot can go wrong, and a lot can go right and my natural optimism (and endurance) will be tested. Was it Henry Ford who once commented “Whether you think you can, or whether you think you can’t – You’re right”. One thing is for certain, I have to leave Thurso on the 16th October.

For the record, I’m aiming to raise £3000 for Sue Ryder’s – Thorpe Hall Hospice, Macmillan and Crohns & Colitis. My total is currently £1630 (inc gift aid £1975). Thanks to all who have sponsored me to date. I’m very, very grateful.

I’m still planning my route, having begun a detailed rework to ensure I’m off the Trunk roads wherever possible.

Why I’m doing this ride and why you may consider sponsoring me can be found at: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/NeilBarker1

If there is anything you’d like to see in my blog or would like to know – just ask. The blog is very much work in progress. If you do like it, please share it and help me towards my goal.

Thanks,

Neil

  1. Hi Neil, it’s quite a challenge but you don’t do things by halves. I wish you every success and look after yourself.
    Dave.

    1. Hi Dave, it’s the lure of your homeland that is spurring me on. A genuine Scotch Pie works wonders for the motivation!

  2. Wishing you all the very best Neil, and our thoughts will be with every mile of the way! Your ears will be burning as well as other parts if your anatomy! xxx
